![]() If its quality was a surprise was that because you’d purposefully avoided some information or because you feel the marketing or reviews were inaccurate? How involved do you get with the hype surrounding a new game and do you think it enhances or diminishes the experience of getting a new game? ![]() With Fallout 4 out this week, and many other big name games about to release, or already out, we want to know what’s the most pleased, surprised, or disappointed you’ve been in a game that you’ve been keenly anticipating? How long were you looking forward to the game and how much did you know about it before its release? The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Orion, who asks what’s your best and worst memories of playing a highly anticipated new game. ![]() By comparison Dark Souls doesn’t sell that much, and, unlike Tomb Raider, has always been niche. That’s why they rebooted the franchise after Legend and Underworld. Even if they did make something like that again they’d always know they could’ve made more money if they went for something more action-orientated. GC: It’s not just a case that old school Tomb Raider is too slow and difficult to appeal to a wide audience. I guess when making a new entry in a franchise developers walk a difficult line between satisfying fans of the series and making their game appeal to everyone. Surely the fact that games like Dark Souls have earned sequels demonstrates there is still a market for more challenging games that don’t spoon-feed their content.Īre we counting Tomb Raider Legend as an old style instalment in the franchise? Legend is probably not the kind of game you meant, but for me it struck the perfect balance between difficulty and reward. Is it because contemporary players have no patience for prolonged exploring and solving puzzles? When you replied to Big Angry Dad82’s letter on Monday I’m curious to know why you think an old-style Tomb Raider game wouldn’t sell. They’re best thought of primarily as display models, with the occasional worthwhile in-game bonus. ![]() Most of the unlockable stuff is either very minor or it’s stuff like training up a computer-controlled fighter in Super Smash Bros. There’s a chip in their base that the GamePad reads, and it’s all done through that. As for amiibos, they don’t need an Internet connection at all. There is a seven second pause before entering many buildings, although the game is weirdly inconsistent about which ones. GC: We barely mentioned the plot? Anyway, yes. How do they work? Do they just unlock on disc withheld content or do they just unlock something that has been added via a later patch? On a different matter, a friend of mine is buying a Wii U for her kids and was wondering if the amiibos will work even though she does not have an Internet connection. ![]() I stopped reading your review of Fallout 4 after the plot spoiler at the start so I was wondering if you still have to wait for the game to load every time you enter a building? One that obviously doesn’t include new ideas either. The outside graphics are good though and I don’t think it’s laziness or incompetence, just a different priority. It’s hard not to ignore the graphics as well, and it’s true the characters do look pretty lame (literally, when you see them running). I assume the game world is going to be littered with stuff like this and that’s great but I think most people are like me and they were expecting this to be some generation-defining masterpiece. Apart from the stuff with the settlement and your homebase I’m not seeing any evidence of any new ideas, and judging from your review there aren’t really going to be any.Īnd yet as soon as I found myself wondering in the woods just off from where you start the old Fallout magic came back, as I stumbled on a family of ghouls and learnt the sad fate of a conspiracy nut with a fetish for collecting nuclear materials. Obviously I’ve only played it for four or five hours at the moment but I am beginning to see what the problem is. I realise 8/10 is actually good, but I’m surprised to see the game’s Metacritic score is now below 90. I have to say I was surprised at the relatively low scores that Fallout 4 has been getting, including from yourselves. ![]()
